How to Start a Prayer Habit When You Have No Idea What to Say

Michael Maio

Let me be honest with you. I did not grow up praying.

I grew up Catholic, and prayer was something structured. You said the words you were supposed to say, in the order you were supposed to say them, and then you were done. It was not a conversation. It was a script.

When I came to faith later in life, really came to faith, the kind where the Holy Spirit opens the Word to you and everything changes, I realized I had a problem. I believed in God. I trusted Jesus. I wanted to pray. And I had absolutely no idea what to say.

If that is where you are right now, this is for you.

Prayer Is a Conversation, Not a Performance

The biggest lie most people believe about prayer is that you need to sound a certain way. Like there is a spiritual vocabulary you are supposed to use, and if you do not know the right words, God will not take you seriously.

That is not how it works.

God is not grading your prayer. He is not waiting for you to use the word "beseech" or "thou" before He listens. He already knows what you need before you open your mouth. Matthew 6:8 says that plainly.

So why pray at all? Because prayer is not about informing God. It is about positioning yourself to hear Him. It is about relationship. You talk to the people you love not because they need the information, but because the conversation itself is the point.

Start With Five Minutes

Do not try to pray for an hour on day one. You will burn out by Wednesday and feel guilty by Friday.

Start with five minutes. Set a timer if you need to. Here is a simple structure that works:

One minute of gratitude. Thank God for something specific. Not "thank you for everything," but "thank you for the conversation I had with my daughter last night" or "thank you for the fact that I woke up and my back does not hurt today." Specific gratitude rewires how you see your life.

One minute of honesty. Tell God what is actually going on. Not what you think you are supposed to feel. What you actually feel. Angry? Say it. Scared? Say it. Confused? Say it. David spent half the Psalms yelling at God, and God called him a man after His own heart. God can handle your honesty.

One minute of asking. Bring your needs. Bring other people's needs. Pray for your family, your job, your health, your decisions. Be specific here too. "Help me know what to say to my son" is better than "bless my family."

One minute of listening. This is the part most people skip. Stop talking. Sit quietly. You are not waiting for an audible voice. You are making space for the Holy Spirit to bring a thought, a verse, a conviction, a sense of peace. Sometimes nothing comes. That is fine. The posture of listening is the point.

One minute of Scripture. Read one verse or one short passage. Not a chapter. One verse. Let it sit. If you do not know where to start, start with Psalm 23. One psalm. One morning. That is enough.

You Do Not Need a Quiet House

I pray on the boardwalk in Long Beach, New York at six in the morning. Seagulls are screaming. Joggers are running past me. The ocean is doing whatever the ocean does that day. It is not quiet.

God does not need silence to hear you. Pray in the car. Pray in the shower. Pray while you are walking the dog. Pray at your desk before you open your email. The location does not matter. The consistency does.

If you wait for the perfect quiet moment, you will never pray. Start where you are, with the noise you have.

What to Do When You Hit a Wall

There will be days when you sit down to pray and nothing comes out. You feel blank. Disconnected. Like you are talking to the ceiling.

That is normal. Do not quit on those days. Those are the days that matter most, because showing up when it feels empty is how trust gets built. Not your trust in God. His trust is already settled. Your trust in the process.

On those days, open Scripture and let someone else's words carry you. The Psalms were written for exactly this. David wrote prayers for the days when he had no prayers left. Use his.

Make It a Habit, Not a Feeling

Prayer is not something you do when you feel spiritual. It is something you do because you are building a relationship, and relationships require showing up on the days you do not feel like it.

Five minutes a day. Same time if possible. Morning works best for most people because the world has not gotten to you yet. But if mornings are chaos, pray at night. Pray at lunch. The time matters less than the consistency.

I will tell you what changed for me. It was not that my prayers got longer or more eloquent. It was that I started hearing God in the ordinary moments. In a conversation with a stranger on the boardwalk. In a verse that suddenly meant something it had not meant before. In a quiet moment on my deck with a guitar in my lap when the right chord and the right thought arrived at the same time.

That does not happen on day one. It happens on day thirty, day sixty, day ninety. It happens because you kept showing up.

Start Today

You do not need a prayer closet. You do not need a theology degree. You do not need to clean up your life first. God is not waiting for you to get it together. He is waiting for you to talk to Him.

Five minutes. Start today.

If you want something to pray over, Psalm 23 is the best place to begin. If you want to go deeper into daily Scripture, our 365-Day Devotional ↗ gives you one reading for every day of the year. And if you want to build a journaling habit alongside your prayer habit, the After Amen Prayer and Listening Journal ↗ was designed for exactly that: a place to write down what you prayed and what you heard.

You are not behind. You are not late. You are exactly where God wants you to be: at the beginning.
